ON ROLEPLAYING
This past month I have played on South, West, and Pacific (and North before it went down for that matter) and I saw very little roleplay - and most of that was from just a handful of characters. I am curious to see if people will make a concerted effort to roleplay, or if it will quickly degenerate to powergaming. One thing that did stick out to me is that many of the supposed "RPers" would shift back and forth in terms of IC and OOC, espcially when they needed things likes rez'es and equipment! There is no way a dead player can shout to the entire world where they died and ask for someone to raise them!

It is sad that because one person wants to play RP, and another PG that one has to be wrong.Neversummer looks like it'll be an absolutely astounding creation.. sad it's to be ravaged by the hak and slash hordes.
The Circle will be unbroken.

interesting to see that you have generally never seen any RPer turn to hardcore RPers but you often see PGers turn to Hardcore RPers....
I dont think that putting a limit on Shout wud necc. be a bad thing. For one, shout is already going to be limited since we will have every1 on 4 different servers. So why not reduce shout to almost non-existant? I mean, if we already have it 3/4 of the way gone, why not the rest?
Often times anyways shout will only give away your position, and if you have died? well it has only been limited. I know that we wont be able to get rid of ppl screaming for rezzes, and we dont really need to. Actaully it will probably just help out enemy factions in doing so. "Why not just have every1 that doesnt want to have shout turn it off?" because shout is a resource which really does need to be tapped into at times. DMs need to make announcements and other such things, it shud just be made into a rarity...
or maybe jsut the server LA is on wont have this "restriction" maybe it will only be applied to a server if it is voted for by mass majority of the server's factions?

I'm not gonna drag me into the RPG vs PG discussion. I prob going to create a char, which i'm going to rp with and another for pg.
Depending on my mood, I choose the rpg or pg character.
Rp is fun, but I takes a lot of energy and sometimes you just want to kill the baddies (or goodies!)
Anyway, still a great post from Sir Sean and I'm happy RP is more encouraged, but not necessary. Should result in some funny conversations, no doubt about it

comedic RPers, well i guess it's somthing... me? i'm spoiled far too much to accept it really.. if i came back to NS it would be for a hak and slash bit of fun, but it never lasts.. RPing just has somthing about it that will always i think draw people more..currently NS has the social element, i believe that's the only thing drawing alot of people back, i mean who here can honestly say they're still playing NS3 because it's great fun for them? you can only kill g1 so many times.. RP servers however, especially challenging ones, the kind where there's always a few area's that you'll never go to more than 4 times in an entire year just because you can't gather that kinda force.. (RP servers generally force people to party)
it's curious that so many people are so adament about being able to solo, yet nobody can deny the favorite places in NS are the ones you must party to defeat.. hehe.

But really, I've never RPed so this is gonna be a little hard for me, I was gonna join some friends in good old pen and paper D&D but it never happened b/c
A. two lived onthe other side of the campus
B. there were nine of us all in leading positions in or relating to our university Clubs orgs. etc (i.e. no bloody time we could all play)
C. I went home for emergency surgery so everyone had to wait for me to recover
soooo I propose a forum like the Bard one, but where people don't have to be in char to post but rather ask about how to be in char, for instance being a STR 11 DEX 12 INT 9 WIS 13 CHA 14 pally is hard to role play, I don't know why but that is what I was told by my DM friend, plus having a cohesive back story can be hard for classes like Pally, Monk, RDD, PM, well those are the ones that come to mind...
If my idea is not concidered that great, which I kinda agree with, the devs have had enough to deal with, at least, if you are a vet. RPer and see posts in the general forum about how to RP a certen Char well, plz help the poor soul out, its prolly me lol

Am I really as ugly as Father Kurth? %#$&
My personal experience is that all of one, either rp or pg, is boring.
I find speaking in third person to be kinda tedious.

If RP was enforced on NS, I am sure I would leave. Why? It is just to demanding and the time I spend on NS is my relax time.
If I want to say that I have 450 HP or that horrid is better then deleyed blast fireball, I would just say it, and I would also say why I think so, together with some d6, d8, evasion fort save number crounching.
There is no rule that would make me say it in RP way. Also, when my phone rings, I WILL say.
g2g phone, brb
There is no way I would use astral messanger is needing my presence or some other RP sentence.
If someone other RPs, ok by me. But RPers start to bore me soon enough. Only really god ones manage to stay interesting for more then 10 minutes. And I don't think newb NS RPers are or will be good at it soon!
That's just my 2c.

But why is the shout channel so horrid? Because people can't roar a message heard around the world in the real world? And just how do you know that the "rifts" don't make everyone capable of hearing things that are shouted in a certain way somewhere else? You *could* motivate shout in a RP way... Additionally, there is no way to remove the shout channel, so learn to live with it. (Yes, there could be full time DM's that kick anyone who shouts, and you could do it with invisible listening objects spread out, but why bother?Throst54 wrote:interesting to see that you have generally never seen any RPer turn to hardcore RPers but you often see PGers turn to Hardcore RPers....

There are three types of people in the world; those who can count, and those who can't.
All I want in NS4 is a bit more respect for people who try to rp a bit.
An example in NS3: My first char was a dwarven fighter who specialized in warhammers. Did I know that warhammers weren't the best weapons? No. Did I care? No, because my dwarf loved warhammers.
How many people told me: hey, why are you using warhammers, they suck, you have to use that weapon or that weapon. When I explained in my dwarvish charm that I loved the sound of cracking skulls with a warhammer, they looked at me (if that's possible) like I was insane.
That's what I hate about pure PG: the pure, cold mathematical calculation of stats, feats, weapon abilities. If everybody plays like this, you'll end up with a server where all chars are for 75% the same build, with the same weapons and armor.
On the other hand, pure rp isn't always fun either, because you can't tell anything about yourself. You always have to stay in character and that gets tiring very quickly.
So i'm going to do some roleplaying lite, trying to find a balance.

If I think warhammers suck. I will tell that to you. It isn't Rp enforced server and you can not expect me to behave like it is.
Of course if you don't like my company, walk away from me, but don't criticise my non RP behaviour. If you want to RP, do it. But don't expect me to RP when I adress to you!

Okay, it seems like most people understand that NS4 with have both RP and PG and you can't force people to do one if they don't want to. It is important however that we also respect people and their game playing styles, rather than deride them in game (either IC or OOC). If we can do this then I suppose we can all get along. Neither is better than the other, and the mod is trying to cater to both.
Also, I suspect that people will probably mix and match styles. Its really hard to be IC all the time, expecially in an action mod where others are not. But also even if you PG mostly, you may still do some RP for your guild and such. My point here is don't expect it to be all or nothing with people when it comes to RP - just go with the flow.

You're right of course, but you'll have to understand that I can react in 2 way: normal out of char and in rp style. In rp style i'll prob be angry because I'm offended as a dwarf. The question then remains: will you understand that it's my character who's angry and not me?Daltian wrote:If I think warhammers suck. I will tell that to you. Like I said, I'm going to roleplay lite, which means I won't be doing it all the time. And I'm certainly not forcing anyone to roleplay. If I notice they don't play along, I'll drop out of character and adapt.
The whole discussion is based on personal taste really, we'll see how it works when NS4 comes online (if it ever comes online, mwoehaha)

On Lands of Lore (at least when I tried it), RP was heavily encouraged. If you wanted to Powergame you were allowed as long as you didn't disrupt the roleplaying. I thought it worked out beautifully. RP wasn't enforced, yet it was still the majority.
