what is with domination

Post by deathdearler1 »

i have built a druid for the second time, this time i'm not going for the all upity shifter. i have noticed that as i use the animal empathy skill i can use the animals to great advantage. it did however suprise me that i could dominate a manticore at the wold, and i could not even attempt to dominate a dire bear from west of the crossroads. is there something in place that doesn't allow them to be beasts as they should be? i can dominate other dire creatures such as boars and wolves just not the bears. :( . i so had my heart set on having my very own pet dire bear to kick the goblins around with.

You can dominate Ancient Dire Bears, they're really strong too. Quite helpful, and make killing things and levelling far easier.

Well, at least you used to, I can't say for sure since I haven't done it in a few months. But last time I checked you could.

Ancient dire made non-empathyable because it's...

Hard coded

Chicken (one hit die, domesticated, flightless): dc 20, 30 if hostile; take 20 if you are not in combat.

Ancient, dire, celestial, fiendish, undead, elemental, force paragon chicken with 100 in all stats (large number hit die): dc 20, 30 if hostile; take 20 if you are not in combat.

Something can be done from AI side...just something else to find a hokey way to rip it out of the game and put something sensible in.

well, even the regular dire bears are invalid targets. i ran around like 12 of them and it said all were invalid. i know i can empathy dire wolves and little stuff, but just didn't know why i couldn't get a bear.

One server I play on made pretty much every Animal bigger than a Lion immune to mind spells to stop people abusing the crap out of "Take 20".
Take 20 only makes sense to use on non-hostile animals as using Take 20 implies you don't have a time limit i.e. its not going to rip your head off any second now!

Then again DM's can see skill rolls so I guess you could always make all the animals charmable again but ban people who keep doing it! :)

i don't know about not having a time limit or anything. technically a druid can walk up to pretty much any animal or beast without fear of it ripping their head off, as with a ranger also. that is why animal empathy is a class skill. i don't see ppl taking a lvl in ranger/druid to dump points into that one.
