Reflections ?

Since reflections was put up becuase of the line outside of prime, I sa we wait until school is in full swing and see what the crowds are like then. If it stays empty then perhaps we will move it and use the box for ns5 development or something. Not sure if the characters would move easily though. Merging the two databases is not an easy task.

If you are using MySQL as the database for both servers, I don't believe it should prove too difficult to merge them.

There's a bit more to it than importing the data as is from reflections into main (which is what that article describes). Most characters on reflections will have the same numeric ID as characters on prime, so imported chars will need a new ID, but then other data for that character like jobs and a dozen other tables that reference characters will have to be changed to reference the new ID when imported, and if they have their own numeric IDs they'll suffer the same problem. We'll also have to jump through some hoops to make sure characters map back to the right login, and make sure any logins that only played on reflections have that data imported to prime without messing up logins that played on both. On top of that, we have to come up with a scheme to handle characters with the same name (and there will be many), and if we rename them we'll have to rename the associated data file at the same time when we copy those in...
and those are just the problems I can think of off the top of my head.

As DD says - it's really not an easy task.

what if there was to be a wipe and everyon who has a char on reflection can choose 1 .... i mean one not 4 not 5 not 12 but just one character that they can keep levels.

example.

my level 28 on reflection goes poof. i make a level 1 char on prime and he gets ato leveled to 28.

now also to make this clear you shoudl announce it 1-2 weeks in advance so the people who DO want to keep a toon can post a dm with there char level or mabey start a thread for Devs to use stating there char level. That way devs can take people off the forums and make everyone happy at the same time.

GRANTEd i know both sides to the reflections argument but i for one would serioiusly hate to see ns die due to unerppulation but i would also hate to see people get severly pissed off ( myself included ) if reflections was to just be taken down.

Great idea. How about we do the same thing on Prime?

You choose one toon to keep. The others are wiped...

Actually that would solve part of the renaming problem. If you specified what name you wanted your char to have when moved then there'd be no need to come up with some whacky automated scheme.

It doesn't really solve the problem of scale though. Even 1 toon per player is still more than we can realistically move manually, so we'd still need to write a clever script.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried using a MySQL utility like Navicat to facilitate (or at least ease the pain associated with) a merge of the two databases?

Maybe if the decision to remove Reflections ever came about there should just be an overall general server wipe for Prime. Everyone starts from scratch!!!

I think you are quite wrong actually. Some of the suggestions have been very serious and have been involving a lot of input from those who would be effected if such an occurrence should become a reality. Just because you have very little to lose on the subject matter does not mean a topic should be locked. This is a very real and very serious issue. The reason this topic has come about is because there is the possibility of it happening, albeit not in the immediate future. If you don't feel the topic is relevant to you then simply do not read it or participate in it, but it should by no means be locked because you do not like where it is going. It has remained on topic regardless of your personal view towards some of the suggestions.

I still recommend a general server wipe should Reflections be taken down. I am serious about it. It would remove all the dead weight and non-active participation as well as those few high level toons that do nothing but aggravate others on the server. The NS4 community has survived server wipes before, and I for one do not fear another. I wouldn't be thrilled by one, but I wouldn't be heartbroken either. Afterall it is just a game.

Threads are not locked just to be locked, especially if they're intended to be constructive, thus far cannot see a reason to lock this.

threads are locked at the originators request i thought, guess every situation is different.

a post that contains the jist of "well if i only get to choose 1 character than you should only get 1 character....." As for a server wipe on prime just because reflections is going down- i think that is the worst idea i have ever heard. hey wait, i think someone just jumped off a bridge let me go do it too....

besides anyone who care to read what the boss wrote would have noticed that he is waiting until schools gets into swing to make any choices. that answers the oringal question that this topic was created for there by completing its purpose. If someone cares to start a new topic then by all means start one.

however if you see fit to let it mozzie on down the worthless spammed flammed topic road then by all means do so, and i shall help it get there.
