Its not that darkness makes you vulnerable to AOO's per se, but the way its coded in the engine, it pretty much leaves you in a perpetual state of flatfootedness, therefore making you vulnerable to Sneak Attacks.
An AOO can be a Sneak Attack but not all Sneak Attacks are AOO.

Serving NS4 proper as Lathander and Sleeth as Bahamut.
Yes, I'm a DM, but your build still sucks.

or even more simply: "before you cast the Darkness, make sure YOU can see in the Darkness." otherwise you will be just as hosed as everyone else. worse off actually, since this little doomcloud of Dark chases you around and you'll be like, "Damn!"
don't be like the Mystery Man who could only go invisible when nobody was looking at him.
Got Ultravision?

This is exactly what I'm confused about. It's blindingly obvious that any AOO is a sneak attack, but AOO => Sneak Attack and Darkness => Sneak Attack does not mean that Darkness => AOO.Amoenotep wrote:Amoenotep wrote:not every sneak attack is an attack of opprotunity. just that when a rogue makes an AoO it becomes a sneak attack.
I'm pretty sure that the author meant sneak attack when he wrote it rather than AOO, I just wanted to check no one knew otherwise. If no one can give me an answer that doesn't involve going the wrong way over an implication I'll just change it anyway.
AoO is an Attack of Opportunity which means that you provoke one when you let your guard down. This can occure when you perform a non-combat action near an enemy or move past an enemy in combat.
A Sneak attack is permitted when you are "flanking" an enemy with an ally or the enemy is unaware of the attacker or is considered flatfooted.
A person is considered flatfooted when they are not engaged in combat or have not had an initiative action yet.
You are considered "not in combat" when you are walking or performing a non combat action. (See Attacks of Opportunity)
You are considered unaware of your attacker in darkness unless you have UV. The same applies for invisible attackers without See Invisibility or when attacked by an attacker coming out of Hiding.
So basically in darkness if you don't have UV you are unaware of your attacker and you are not able to engage them in combat. So you will be considered flatfooted, so your attacker will get Sneak Attacks and by walking around you will provoke Attacks of Opportunity.
Hopefully this explains the difference a bit more since in the case of Darkness you do not actually provoke attacks of opportunity but you will be considered flatfooted and your attacker will get sneak attacks against you without the aid of UV.
At a certain range you may be able to "see" your attacker in the darkness and be able to engage them but if they move outside of that range you may drop out of combat and be considered flatfooted again.
