Your network configuration affects everyone

Post by Lokey »

Improperly configured networks are a thorn in our side and yours, lag is the least of the problems it causes. It's getting very annoying to diagnose problems on the server without accounting for these effects, so here is what you have to do:

1) Game client port: In the nwnplayer.ini under the [Profile] section there is a field called Client Port, the default value is 5121. Each game on your network must have a different client port, for the second, third, and so forth comp on your network with NWN installed, increase the port number by one (we allow the type of traffic NWN uses over a decent range). Ini files can be edited with any text editor: don't have NWN running and make a backup of the file before changing things. For example if you have two comps on your network that are used to play NS, set one to 5121 and the other to 5122.

2) There's a specific network configuration that's troublesome but forget what it is at the moment.

We'll see if we have the will to live/continue devving after getting something up to make sure multiple logins from the same IP aren't a problem.

Here is a situation where two comps were both showing the client port as 5120. I changed one to 5121 and the other to 5122. I logged into a server with one comp (not NS4) and the 5121 changed to 5122 on that one comp after I logged out. I logged into NS4 with the one that I changed to 5122 and it changed back to 5120 when I logged back out. Are these suppose to change like this? If so then what are we suppose to do?

Make sure nwn is not running when you edit it.

Why would I want to count 12 hours twice? I’m perfectly capable of counting to 24, and while we’re at it, can someone go shoot named time zones. GMT+x is all we need!

I've only been able to do it in Linux.

I went ahead and set up both my computers to use different client ports. I never dual log as I only have one account/key, but sometimes my friend comes over and we both play. I have NAT setup on my Cisco 2514 so we share one IP. So, I hope this helps the server load/lag, at least when my friend comes over.

However, I've always wondered about how these port settings would change lag/server load at all. I don't want to claim that I'm some networking expert, but I'm CCNA certified and have done my share of UDP/TCP socket programming (probably more than my share). It would be great if someone with some networking knowledge could help try to explain in technical terms why these settings matter w.r.t. lag / server load.

I'm just curious more than anything. Thanks!

NWN's network protocols suck. Same ip/port makes the server and clients do tons of wonky things.

I love that "wonky things" is a technical term.

Too many problems here recently.

Let me remind you: things that affect everyone on the server negatively result in perma-bans, no excuses.
