PWnD Event “Pick Up” - Feb 20, 2010

Post by Chernobyl_Glow »

Attn Members of Aetheria!

I'm like 42% sure that I'm going to have a free day on Saturday and thought I might organize a PWnD Event. Last time I was this confident I had to reschedule. :) We'll call this one "Pick Up".

= Pick Up =
Ever been to the local basketball court (or hockey rink) and just teamed up with some other guys or gals and just played 5v5. It may be called other things but in Texas we call it "Pick Up". That's what we're thinking for this. Just grab 4 friends and play. No stress over who's got more numbers or who's doing what. Let's all just have some good ol' pvp for the reason of fun.

The intention of this event would be to create an environment similar to a recreation center “Pick Up Game”. A team claims the playing field and welcomes all challengers. A queue of challengers is created. After each bout the winner stays and prepares to fight the next challenging team. The losers "walk". They might disband and join other teams or just throw their team back in the queue for another try.

The game perpetuates with each new challenger and each challenger is likely to try and exploit the weakness of the current champion. Therefore, the ones who might stay the longest will be versatile and flexible enough to overcome any combination of foes. Each round will have a 5 minute time limit and there will be no ties. The Champions must eliminate the challengers before the 5 minutes are up. The challengers simply need to stay alive. The team that holds the field for the most consecutive rounds will receive an enormous prize of 1 gp EACH!

= Build Restrictions =
There will be no rules as to which builds are allowed or disallowed. Any may come. Hiders, Casters, CoTs, Shifters, Dragons and any others. There will be no restrictions against gear swapping, UMD usage etc.

= Healing =
The only thing disallowed in this event are Heal Pots, Heal Kits, Heal Rings or Healing Scrolls of any kind. This would include Greater Restoration Scrolls or Restoration Pots. No Raise Dead or Resurrection Scrolls either. All of this to emphasis the role of the Cleric(s). Lay on hands is acceptable along with Heal Spells either by Cleric, Druid, Bard or any other character capable of casting the spell from memory. A cleric can Resurrect or Raise his partners for as long as he has spells slotted. Still no Scrolls.

= The Catch =
There are only 2 remaining rules:
1. Four of the five members of a team must be of the same faction.
2. The fifth of the five players must be relatively new or inexperienced but can be of any faction.

In other words, Players 1-4 must be of the same faction and can be of any experience level. The fifth player must be someone newish and can be from any faction. The new player will be the team's captain and spokesperson (where necessary).

= Gotta have a New Guy? WTH? =
Obviously, the intent of rule number two is to generate some involvement by new players. And by new player, I’m kind of meaning new to PvP level of play. Obviously if they only have a level 17 character they will be a little outmatched. So I'm expecting that we find players who have been around long enough to have a high level character or more. Perhaps this player might have a 40 lvl character. But probably not two. And certainly not three. If this person has already joined a guild that is super. But they probably would not have completed a tagged character. Hence, I would expect many of these new players to be untagged but perhaps have an affiliation. If someone has a few 40’s but very little PvP experience I would think that to be acceptable.

This rule will be enforced "on your honor." I’m confident that no team will have any motivation to “cheat”. And, I would not expect Pielo Ashe to come back with a triumphant return - and just because he meets the other qualifications of only having one 40 lvl he could not be our fifth. This would not be a new player. Further, the new player could not log on to Cyclone PWnD and say, "I'm the new guy and Shadow Warroir is letting me use this guy." We all love the saying, “let common sense be your guide” and as much as I hate to, I suppose we can use that here. You may be thinking, "what if we cannot find enough new players?" - Well really all we need is two and they can play for anyone and everyone. They'll just be involved more often. And if we need to we can drop that requirement but let's give it a good shot first. That's really my point behind the whole thing.

= When and Where? - Cuz I'll be There! =
Date: The event date will be Feb 20.
Time: The intention is to just play all day. But let's say that we have an official start time of 3pm Central Standard Time (UTC-6), just after the reset. This would be late Saturday Evening in Paris (11pm) and Early Sunday Morning in Aussieland (8am) - I think.
Duration: We'll continue for as long as there is a Champion and a Challenger.
Location: TBD. We were thinking of using the Sleeth Colosseum.

= Recruiting =
So if you're interested, start talking to those players on the server that you don't know. Get them involved. Recruit!

...

Sound cool? Recommendations? You know I'm always open to suggestions.

PS. I don't think we'll need much DM support. But perhaps we can lure Bahamut out into the open for a quick lunch since we'll have so many morsels right there in his backyard. :)

Do a die roll, two lowest are team captains :). The lowest of the low gets first pick (or somethin' like that) anyway.

Or "shoot for teams," everyone roll d20, try and divide em by the d20(maybe d100 would be better) rolls into teams of 4. First 4 numbers in numerical sequence are team one, next 4 are team two, and so forth. That would result in some complete random chaos, get some interesting strategies that way.

Awesome idea Glow, wish I could be there :( got work stuff this weekend.

I might need some DM support to get my NC toon to 40. Ugh... Real life always getting in the way of everything. I suppose with a mega leveling session Friday, 39 will have to do.

if we need to relax the "faction only" and make it allies only or even "open" i'm not too particular on that. i do want to get the new people in though. let's see how we do with replies this week and we'll cater it to suit those who can make it.

we'll miss ya crazy. darn shame you gotta work. hope we can catch ya next time.

oh, and it would probably be best not to have it in sleeth. People would lose gold and potentially items every time they are pked by an AO faction member.

Sounds like a fun event Glow. I understand your point about the restrictions on all of the healing scrolls and such......clerics should get that perk. Any thoughts to banning greater restoration scrolls as well?

Good open space (in my opinion) assuming we pre-clear map is the first map of posi. (or even 1st map of celestia, but that might get a bit crazy if everyone leaves map and/or respawns)

I think the spot that you had the hiders vs seekers event (Old town north?) would work well again. I liked that spot. There are obstacles, but that could make it even better. I actually would rather have it in a map that isn't just big and open.

If we allow for obstacles, the top of the mountain is good too.

If you want open spaces, the four screens in Isle of Dreams (I think that's its name) might be a good location. Could clear all 4 and have someone holding each to allow for some epic rolling battles.

Alternatively if you want the terrain to be a factor, maybe the first gnoll screen. Has several different levels and places to make a stand, but could overly favour archers / casters.

I can supply the open space if needed.

With the understanding that not much if any DM support is needed   (Glow feel free to PM me with any additional needs or wants you may have and I will see what I can do)

I thought the Old Town North worked perfectly for the small 1v1 battles in the Hiders vs Seekers event. The terrain, the darkness, etc were really cool. However, I was kind of thinking we'd strive for the opposite effect on this one. We'll use Old Town again for something. But for this I'm leaning towards nothing to hide behind. Refering to the Basketball court, just wide open.

As far as using Celestia or even Posi, the more remote the location the more difficult it will be for players to exercise the option of changing characters. "Man, Able was worthless, I'll get Ben for the next one," I'm guessing players will want to occasionally (or often) relog and run a different toon in. The farther away we are the more difficult that is. So I prefer close to optimal. Plus, on the Celestia map, late comers would need to run through all of Posi to join us.

How bout the courtyard in Neversummer? Us old LA guys would enjoy that just for nestalgia sake. Its pretty open but there are a few buildings and a terrace. Just a boat ride from FD and only a few maps from Avendell.

I also considered one of the Plains of Angmar Maps. Big, Open, Easy to get to. Easy to clear. Close Bind Point in the Oasis.

As far as Gtr Resto Scrolls, I always considered those to be a Heal Scroll. So no. Those would not be allowed. I'll edit for clarification. Bascially in the simplest terms, I'm trying to limit anything that would be only used primarily to restore your Hit Points. Thx alasteir, Good catch.

And Thanks, edge! For a start, we could probably use help setting boundaries. So if you have some thoughts on that. Mostly so that the spectators can know how close to the action they can be.
