Just wondering...
What happens if a level 39 sorc tries to take a level of Paladin for 40th?
Do the new rules mean that you would have to take one level of Paladin at 1st level then 39 Sorc?

Aye, if you wanted only one level of a class to go with 39 levels of Sorcerer, you'd have to take it sometime before 20th level; and as DD says above, Paladin/Monk/SD needs five at all times. If you tried to take a level of it at a time when you could no longer meet the 5-minimum requirement, it simply would tell you you couldn't and would reset your leveling, much as if you tried to take a prohibited class for your faction (that is, if you tried at 36th Sorc, for example, it would say "you cannot take 5 levels in this class with the levels you have left" and it would reset your level).
