A cple small probs
A cple small probs
1st off..was in NS today, was going around doing the messenger quest when i ran into a group of 5 "unleashed" balors in the acad. district. At first we thought it might have been a DM having fun, since the balors read as "unleashed" and not summoned. But a player said it was the result of some gate spells another player did, and that player didnt cast protection from evil on himself. I was killed twice, just trying to get away from them and i lost xp/gold, just like the old pvp summons bug.
2nd prob is something i experienced when i lvl'd. I was a lvl 6 fit/rog duel class char..i took a fit lvl, which put me at 4 fit / 3 rog. When i finished lvl'ing, there was a line that said "experience points lost, 131" right above my "favored class experience bonus" line. A bug? or just the result of having one class 1 lvl higher then the other? (never had that happen before though)

Intentional, has nothing to do with which classes you have. I'll try to get a full explanation somewhere visible.

Looks to me like you can't gain xp beyond what it takes to hit your next level now.
Or more plainly, you can get the xp, but it gets trimmed off as soon as you take your level, down to 1xp point over what you needed.
Over lunch I was 9xp away from 15th. I killed something for 37xp, gained my level, and lost 27xp. It left me 1 point over what I needed.
I heard there was an exploit that this fixed.

But how is that an exploit? Say you hit your level in the middle of dealing with a group of monsters. It isnt exactly reasonable to assume that you can extract yourself from the group, run off to a quiet place and lvl. Then come back and finish the job. Nor is it fair. As a default NWN "setting", you could, in theory, run around killing things until you were at lvl 40w/o taking any of them. NWN tracks your xp, and if you go over the lvl up number, the differance just gets added to your total after yer done.
So if thats what it is, explain to me how its an exploit or unfair advantage, ect. Because i cant see how it can be.

You can, say, stop taking levels at level 18, which makes killing faction guards fairly easy, and worth tons of exp. Then you save your exp till you can level to 40 all at once. Since until you actually take the level, you get the exp of whatever your actual level is. This new script is a rather ingenous and creative fix to this particulalry bad exploit (IMHO).
I don't know Aurora's scripting, but it might be better, Lokey, if you allowed players say 1,000 exp past the level amount to remain (assuimng that's easy to script). Then people in a fight won't feel cheated, but the script will stop things like my level 40 sorc (I was working on, since prior bug reports made this "exploit" sound ok
).

Ahh so thats the exploit hey was trying to get rid of. Ty for the answer alex. And yeah, id agree with your 1000 pt "grace" period. As i said, it isnt always feasible or fair to extract yourself from the battle yer in the middle of, just to make sure you dont get cheated out of the xp you could be earning from that fight.

Alexia gave it to you.
When a dev says something like "I'll try to get a full explanation somewhere visible." it doesn't always mean "now". Usually it means "when I get an opportunity and get it worded properly"... which can take a while. The Devs are busy guys. :)

Another aspect to consider. Before i got HoU, I hit lvl 20 on ns3 and kept playing. When I did get HoU, I was able to go to lvl 24 immediately. Do you want to penalize people for not having an expansion when they do get the expansion?

Didn't one of the dm's or dev's say that if you wanted to spend your time killing rats for 17 or 18 xp a pop at lvl whatever to get to 20 then go for it?

It isn't punishment because you didn't have the higher levels before so you aren't actually missing anything. :) It also prevents exploits of disabling your HotU install until you want to level up to a high level.
