Hide and Movesilent VS spot and Listen

Post by Fezz »

Ok after having a VERY interesting converse with some ppl on the teamspeak server on this issue i have chased up a lot of the stuff which was discused and am going to post it here for everyones perusal. This info was all collected from boiware posts made by Stanley woo and Brenon holmes (coder for the game)

The following info is hard coded behind the scenes stuff no one ever sees :

Passive (default) mode
Trap detection radius: 5ft
Trap detection rate: 6 seconds (every round)
Trap detection roll: d20 + half skill (possible bug after 1.68 giving full skill)
Spot/Listen roll: d10 + half skill

Active (Detect) mode
Trap detection radius: 10ft
Trap detection rate: 3 seconds (twice per round)
Trap detection roll: d20 + full skill
Spot/Listen roll: d20 + full skill

Stealth checks
Player detects stealth: 5 times per second
Player rolls for hide/move silently/spot/listen: 6 seconds
NPC detects stealth: 4 seconds
NPC rolls for hide/move silently/spot/listen: 6 seconds

Now here comes the interesting stuff lacking in the game docs -

Listen/Move Silently:

* Automatically cannot detect silenced creatures
* Can only detect invisible (or when you're blind) creatures within the max attack range.
* Cannot hear sanctuaried creatures
* If there is something between you and the target (including creatures) there's a modifier of +5 DC for every 40cm of thickness in outdoor areas
* In indoor areas, if the LOS is blocked and the target is within 4 tiles (dfs search) there's a modifier of +2 DC
* Area listen check modifiers
* +10 DC if you are in combat
* +5 DC if the target is standing still
* -5 DC if you are standing still
* +1 DC for every 3 meters of distance to the target
* Relative size modifiers (Tiny: +8, Small: +4, Medium: 0, Large: -4, Huge: -8)
* Favoured enemy bonuses

Spot/Hide In Shadows:

* Automatically cannot detect invisible creatures
* Automatically cannot detect anything while blinded
* Area spot check modifiers
* During Night, if you do not have a light on you (including weapon lights and darkvision) there is a +5 DC modifier
* During Night, if the target has a light on them, there is a -10 DC modifier
* For stealthed players only, there is a +5 DC if they are in the back arc
* +10 DC if you are in combat
* +5 DC if the target is standing still
* -5 DC if you are standing still
* Relative size modifiers (Tiny: +8, Small: +4, Medium: 0, Large: -4, Huge: -8)
* Favoured enemy bonuses

Listen Check DCs to Detect Invisible Creatures

Invisible Creature Is . . . DC
In combat or speaking 0
Moving at half speed Move silently check result
Moving at full speed Move silently check result –4
Running or charging Move silently check result –20
Some distance away +1 per 10 feet
Behind an obstacle (door) +5
Behind an obstacle (stone wall) +15

Sorry for the length of this post - maybe its in the wrong place as well, though it should HELP ppl.
I can say right now i never ever knew half of these modifiers and stuff and ive been around a long time on this game. I hope it provides details for all you hipsers and detectors lol.[/b]

Yes its very informative, i particularly like the light on your wpns (lots of those on ns 4) making the dc to spot you -10 !! it dosent have to be a torch in your hand :-)
and now there is a use for sanctuary spells its like being silenced as far as listen goes.

Also love the if your silenced - no one can use listen to find you even if its 127 !! not bad for a 2nd lvl bard/cleric spell hey.

And young master pielo standing way back with his sling was getting +1 dc for each 3 meters lol !!!! - the list of cool stuff just goes on and on and on!

anyways of all you ppl that viewed this so far yall knew this stuff already ??? or ya just logged off immediatley to go and plan something new lol :-)

This does explain a lot of things I've experienced. This also answers a theory I've always had...which is an Aasimar/SD would be ridiculous.

Darn. The secret's out!

Anyhoo, I've always wondered if a ZERO hide/ms toon who was buffed with Silence/Sanctuary and Invisibility could waltz around in Sneak Mode undetected by the general populace. It'd make a rousing game of "hide and go seek".

ah well i spilled the beens becasue i thought if your a hider , unlike bioware i believe you deserve to know ALL the things affecting your ability to do that, and the reverse also applies if your a spotter/listener :-)

think of it as an even playing field :-)

I guess this info is cool for those who want to perfect their build and who want to know about every nut and bolt in how their build works do. I have a couple of SD pc's and a good "spotter".

I look at it this way, I get spotted fine, I don't fine (visa versa for my spotter). I play both types of pc's for their ability but mainly for the fun of it. To get so teck, it's not my cup-o-tea. Kind of dampers the fun for me. I did read through the info once, but forgotten 99% of it. Thanks anyways.

Personally, I think it's great to know the limitations of the game mechanics. A lot of the things listed here are just common sense type things as far as hiding in a RL situation, but not something you're necessarily sure the game takes into consideration.

If sneaking were just on/off, your hide/ms vs. their spot/listen then it would be a much simpler world, but these details lend to tactics and strategy when hiding as well as spotting.

This is very informative. Thanks, Fezz, for going to the effort to post these details. I really think the mods should take your post and make it sticky. I always appreciate knowing the mechanics of the game, but I am too lazy to look myself. :lol:
