I always wanted to make a character with a subrace but the truth is ... the xp is bugged or something. If it says ECL +3 and you are level 5 you are supposed to get xp as a level 8 character would get ... but you dont, you get way less exp and that kind of ruins subraces for me :?

It does seem to work as designed as far as i can tell. Taking down something overpowering with my drow gives me about 50xp, which is about the same as taking down a moderate with a normal character.

I have another reason for saying that ECL is broken: We have no quests. The D&D rules (i assume) we're getting the ECL formula from likely assume that you get about 50% of your xp from kills and 50% from quests. But we have no quests to do past the low levels so ECL hits twice as hard as it's supposed to.

I've got my drow to level 13 now (try it, you'll learn the true meaning of commitment to a character) and it's pretty much impossible to even progress, let alone level him, without using munchkin darkness tactics to stay safe because i have to kill 15 overpowering+ enemies to get the xp i lose if i die, and something random and desperately unfortunate normally happens before then to lead to my death (like getting bitten by a bebilith for TEN con damage and promptly getting critted for my entire health bar before i can use a hk. grr).

Even more galling is that it often takes a matter of a couple minutes to kill a decent enemy, when i could rake the plains of angmar of 10 rats for 6xp each and get the same amount with no chance of dying, i'll just get bored witless doing it. This may not be an ECL specific point though, probably any character could make more xp killing level 1 critters, but again you wouldn't normally do it because following quests would double your xp rate and that will lead you to enemies your level, but this isn't supposed to be a rant about the lack of quests, just about ECL.

I know we're following the rules, but this isn't stock D&D.
I'd like to see ECL reduced to about half its current penalty for the first reason i gave above, but expect that will meet stiff resistance.

Probably a better suggestion is to make the xp penalty on death reflect your ECL. I believe the idea behind ECL is to slow the progress of your advancement, but i'm finding that after a certain level it's totally killing it.

Cue people telling me i'm just a bad player and i'm doing it all wrong...
