Greater Restore

Post by Wolfarus »

If we arnt willing to let GR be scrollable and useable by anybody (like rd) then how about we at least put in an NPC (or add the function to an existing one) in your city's temple or HQ that will cast GR on you for -x- amount of gold. Having 10 or more lvls drained from a boss or high lvl mob, and being "perma-screwed" until it wears off is rediculous. Oh wait, thats right. You can always just get yourself killed and suffer the xp / gold loss if you dont have the obscene amount of time to wait for it to wear off! Great idea!

Or maybe bring level drain back down to being cure-able by regular restores, and use GR as a "cures all that ails you + heals you by 200 hps" solution. Its just not fair or conductive to good, fun gameplay to make players "hope" there is a cleric who's high enough lvl to cast GR on you, and who can either follow you around like a babysitter, or park that char in the area you're hunting in. Especially during the odd hours when the server goes down to less then 12 people.

You do realize that level drain doesn't kill you and that you can still play while down a few levels. Sure you have some penalties but most of the time it's not even as bad as being cursed. Sure it would be nice to have NPCs in home factions that could cure you but is it really that big of a problem? Would you really go all the way back to your starting faction city for the cure? Honestly, I never play clerics and if I do get level drained I'll usually just keep playing and ignore the loss of a few AB and saves until there is a server reset. Once the server resets all your negatives go away so it's not even truly permanent.

Yes, i do realize that LD dosnt kill you. And im not talking about just 1 hit with it, im talking about the times where you were in a particularly tough fight with a boss or mobs that can LD you, and suddenly you're down 6+ lvls and a crapload of skill points, ab, saves, ect. If this happens relatively close to reset (1/2 hour or less) then its not a huge deal. But if it hits ya right after a reset or soon after, its rediculous to have to wait 3+ hours to get your effectiveness back. Especially if its a boss fight that you've earned your way to being able to complete, but oh noes.. he/she/it drained you beyond any hope for managing to take them down now. Now you can stand there and try to kill them, being drained down to damage on par with a nerf baseball bat, or you can run away, wait for the reset or try to find a player who can cast it, then go back and start the whole process all over again, and hope that said boss dosnt do the same thing to you again.

As its been said, its not (infact, usually) always possible to find a player who has GR, and who can or is even WILLING to meet you -wherever-, and cast it on you.

Make GR scrollabe and usable by anybody, but have it cost enough in gold and xp, so players arnt flooding the server with them, and things would be just fine. (not sure if its possible, but maybe put GR scroll making on a timer, like the MA items are. Say.. you can only make 10 scrolls of GR every 6 hours)

Or just have an NPC in each city and the neutral area's (aven, icedale, maybe even 1 in the planar store) who can cast it on you for 50k in gold, so you dont have to wait for a reset to fix ya :P

my guess as to why this often-requested feature has not been put in is because its either dev-intensive, or they dont want to, or both.

remember, the "deal" with free online games like this is that everyone does it because they find it fun, including devs. luckily for the rest of us, some folks find developing/programming these things fun. the implied deal here is that in exchange for their hard work, the devs get to work on whatever they find interesting. because otherwise we'd have nothing at all.

so if it tickles a devs fancy to implement, say, "Mass Ray of Frost," instead of "Frostdale's Penguin of Greater Restore" then we're like, hey cool thx.

Try shouting for a GR with a reward of gp and/or items. 13 cleric levels required to cast it, you can often find ppl in avendell able to assist. But if you happen to be on when there is no one able/willing to assist perhaps just switch to another toon and wait out the reset. If you are soloing, perhaps go to an area where drains aren't used by enemy mobs.

I don't mean to come off callously, but it sounds like you ran into this problem one time and it annoyed you to no end... which leads me to ask 'how often is this really an issue?' Alternately, perhaps you are trying to repeatedly solo an area which really isn't meant to be solo'd, and drains are one of the ways to maintain that.

No, ive ran into it on a semi-regular basis. My char is just advanced enough now that being lvl drained dosnt hasten his demise (so its "fixed" for me) it just knocks him out from continuing to do much of anything but run around with a foambat trying to make the epic dwarves die from laughter :P

This last incident just pushed me over the edge, because i had survived (quite well, i think) every single spell cheery could throw at me, ragnar wasnt a threat in the least. Another 3 mins and cheery would have been dead, with ragnar next. But what happens? she manges to hit me a cple times and drain quite a few lvls down, leaving me unable to finish the run i had started.

I seem to remember that back in the day, regular level restore pots would clear up level drains. So i dont see why it cant be rolled back to that point...

horray for yet another undocumented change... and another blow to bards/umd users trying to get rid of annoying drains.

...

btw: all posts should be deleted that are shorter than the SIG banner the poster is using (based on a consistent template for font size and window width) that might help cut the height a bit. My sig used to be twice as high but a DM complained about it so i shrunk it down right away.
