Assassin paralyze duration/DC
Assassin paralyze duration/DC
As long as stunning fist can hit DC:55 or whatever people can get it up too I'm cool with someone being able to get their paralyze dc up there too. I'm sure you have to sacrifice quite a bit of other things from the build to attain that. My concern is the duration. I'm not sure how it's calculated personally but it seems that leaving a toon/creature paralyzed for 5 real life minutes is a bit much. You really only need about 20 seconds or less to finish them off, or at the most 1 minute to be able to go deal with some of his friends while he stands paralyzed.
So I have a two fold question based on that.
#1 How is the duration of the paralyze determined or is it a set amount of time.
#2 Does anyone else think(of course I know assassin's will disagree) that it is a bit too long.
Again I'm not arguing the DC I'm pretty sure at least from what I know that it seems a fair trade off for what someone would have to sacrifice to get it. It's just that silly duration I'm concerned with.
Thanks all,
Krimon

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
It's 1 TURN per assassin level. So a 30 assassin can leave you paralyzed for half an hour, real time.
I've seen assassin's paralyze entire maps of dwarves and go around slowly picking them off.

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
Im kind of thinking they went with such a duration because if an assassin gets you with the paralyze (which only happens if youre not currently engaged in combat) youre dead in the water. Instead of just straight dead, FoM is your friend ';)

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
No doubt korr, FoM is where it's at in this instance. However, the ability to leave a toon completely useless for a 30 minute duration is a bit much. I'm not much of a coder so don't know how this works. But an assassin could feasibly run around paralying people and leave them all standing there for 30 minutes. I don't know if logging out helps or any of that nor would I really try. But, the ability to render a toon completely useless for that time seems a bit much. If they kill you who cares, that doesn't take that long.
Consider a hypothetical. You're doing what you do, be it leveling or raiding or defending, an assassin paralyzes you. Then noone kills you. Let's say you happen to be alone. So you can't get one of your mates to pk you. Basically you can't do anything for 30 minutes except log in a lowbie or something cause to switch toons(in the case of raiding) would be against the rules. Excepting the case of defending. Having the ability to force someone to take a 30 minutes break from the game(which may not always be bad for some folks) is a bit much don't ya think?

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
the amount of preparation and luck that has to do with actually getting your paralyze sneak attack to work is so daunting...most players just don't bother with it.
however, it is a long time yes: its the way the class came stock.

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
I have played amoenoteps message backwards and it says it should be 4 minutes per level, and that FoM should not save you, the only defence should be immunity to critical blows.
I happen to agree.

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
It is defeated by FoM and it really shouldn't be too hard to get someone come FoM you. The DC is harder to get up there because it uses your INT modifier + assassin level and what melee toon has a high INT modifier (you're going to sacrifice AB). It's a trade off but it can be done effectively. The poison is also an insta kill that can be very difficult to save.
But this is the prestige class of SL and it requires great dedication to get your DCs high enough to be effective. You have to pay a lot and you lose a lot (like saves). It should be powerful if you have to invest that much into it.
Besides, no one even uses assassins.

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
To respond to Krimon's concerns, it has been addressed by staff previously. Assassins are not to leave toons paralyzed then run off. But in the heat of battle (in the wild or in a raid) if there is a group of enemies, just because you paralyze then doesn't mean you are obligated to kill them first... typically getting para'd makes that toon the last target (cleanup). During raids, both offensive and defensive, getting paralyzed in the cradle room is a ticket to a long time of taunting and watching. Better hope your posse is on its way with a FoM. But that is only because we are wasting our time as well as yours

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
As you said Krimon, someone leaving you for 30 minutes paralyzed most definently breaks an NS4 commandment about ruining others' fun!
On the flip side assassins generally have low saves as well, and I have a wizard focused in slow bigby and flesh to stone. Throw in some greases and such and there are ways for non assassins to return the favors ';) If youre curious of how slow it makes you, dont be its more annoying to CRAWL than to be para LoL!!!

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
Oh cool, didn't realize it had been addressed and that rule interpretation was in place. In that case I really had no point to make but I did learn how it's calculated. I knew about FoM I was just concerned over the being alone situation which my question has been answered about.
Thanks everyone for the information.

Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
Someone can FoM you, or like we did with krimon, killed him as nobody had FoM. Which wouldn't be a problem if people could actually use rods, but now it seems restricted to mages, bards and rogues. I'm pretty sure at one point rods were usable by all. Was this because of a bioware update? or was this a NS change? I was AWOL when this changed.
Re: Assassin paralyze duration/DC
I can not remember a time when rods where not sorc/bard/wiz only. Rouges can with umd overcome class limits, but they cant auto use...

Why would I want to count 12 hours twice? I’m perfectly capable of counting to 24, and while we’re at it, can someone go shoot named time zones. GMT+x is all we need!
