Map pins

Post by Cahaal »

It might be helpfull for new players if the map pins saved. This way they would know where they have explored and be able to get back to places they liked. I've tried this out lately and they save while you are in the game but when you exit they are lost. Just something small that would be really helpfull now that we are seeing more 3.5 players migrating.

From what I know, they're lost when the server resets (you also lose map information at that time). And yes, it would be helpful. When I joined the server I started placing map pins to indicate where different zone transfers lead, and this is very helpful for people before they have memorized the layout of the world. The only way a newbie can otherwise find anything is by looking up the maps online. However, using that option most people will only stay in the areas documented by maps, which don't include Skara, IoD, and many other areas I'm sure I haven't been to because I depend on maps (that don't have the areas) or other people (who only travel to high XP "popular" areas) to find my way around.

One day I'm probably going to build a 40 monk or something just to explore all of Aetheria.

Actually, this would be neat - if you take the time to make notes on an area, be nice if they stayed with you.

Rangers also make good xplorers, Ranger sight lets you see of outdoor maps, including islands like in Rock Peak, 20% move increase, and at 21 outdoor stealth to hide away while you make your own maps. Atleast that how I mad my many pages of maps when I first got here.

I agree, would be nice if the map pins saved. Perhaps in the way journal entries save, on the players computer.

I don't think map pins would be worthwhile. It wouldn't improve gameplay at all. And getting lost and going the wrong way is important part of new server experience. Even those that play here for ages still can by mistake zone somewhere they haven't been before or forgot it existed.

It is server side, but notoriously messy to play with. It's polled a lot and one mistake takes out clients + server... You can go read virusman's explanation for his area injection plugin. Think it's this thread: http://www.nwnx.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1244

Imagine it's somewhere in the module.ifo area list/props + player list mess where map state is stored, the magic variable stuff you linked...not sure that I'd want to do that on an NS scale even if we had carefully planned out names for map note waypoints. Ug, if it even works for player placed ones...

I read your link ( http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Map_pin ), think I prefer the direct nwn2 script functions. Ok, know that :) (Also not sure how they are linked to areas, object ids change after all.)
