unnerf wizard (just a little sheesh)

Post by Chikubu »

Ok, I don't usualy gripe on a forum, specialy on a forum from dedicated gamers making virtual environments for us players to run around and play.

Thank you.

But let me vocal one pont.

You guys have nerfed the wizard class.

I've played adnd 1st-3rd plus the famly set they had in the large paper backs also including Cyberpunk, Gamma World, Shadowrun and a few others.

I've played pc role playing games starting with text only ones on the mainframe, apple ii ones with no hard drive, up to all the ones for pc, and a few mass online types. Remeber rouge for the 8086?

They all treat a wizard the same. They start out puny and weak and barley able to kill a sick rat, but end up powerhouses to beat down any takers.

I log in to your wolrd with my lil wiz, and cant call a familiar. "Ok," I think, I can live with it, they are probably just trying to keep me from being too mega powerful later on.

So I'm a Wizard, not a Sorc (who's talent is genetic laying in the bloodlines), not a Ranger with some casting skill, not a Pladin with some access to his deities might, not a Druid with nature to call on, but a Wizard. The KING of magic class. Wizards know magic.

Wizards have the ability to prepare thier spells ahead of time from a vast selection.

EEEEEEANT..not here, no scrolls for sale, no scrolls researchable, and hard as heck to find another wizard to trade with. Monsters drop them, once in a blue moon.

Ok, then I'm a Master of Magic, I'll have magical items of power accessable by no other class...

EEEEEANT...not here, you will find for sale in the stores items to boost paladin, ranger, druid, cleric, sorc, bard magic, but not Wizards..no.

Why do those classes get to buff their magical ability when the King of Magic class does not?

Who made all these magical items? Oh yeah, a crafting system that any non mage can make magic from. Maybe there are some crafted items I am missing. Ok I am a Wizard, a specialist in making magic items. But here, anyone can craft magic items.

Ok maybe there is hope I'll find a master craftsmen to hook me up with stuff I know not about currently. It'll make me happy, If I can continue to love my character and not just shelve him.

Ok I can get a helm of itel. Great. Too bad intel doesn't boast spell slots like charisma does for sorc's or bards, or Wisdom for clerics and paladins.

I'll just buff up my weapon, using my magical might, i'll turn it into a terrible thing to bring harm to the enemy. What? I can only put one enchant on it? Why can i learn flame weapon, greater magic weapon, and keen weapon if I can only use one of them?

Being a Wizard matters not. The class can just be pulled and this world would not miss it. The world has magic, but it did not come from schools of wizards, it came from mixed blood, nature and the gods, and nimble craftsmen with recipies.

Other classes step on the Wizard. Fighter boot heal is now a Wiz delicacy. Barbarians cut of our heads and play toss the head games. Rouges hide from sight and stab our backs. Clerics hammer us to death while calling on might from their god. Monks send a flurry of blows and dodge our spells of power. Sorcs fling 20 more spells than we are capable of stripping our defenses and searing our flesh.

Maybe its not you guys, maybe its bioware that is bringing in the nerfs.

I have a nerf football. Nice spoungy thing. Can someone craft a cloak out of it for me? Maybe +5 soak 50?

You do realize the people who put in the time to get high level Wizzys & Sorcs have, on average, the most powerful characters on the server? Wizzy is not nerfed at all, especially in comparison to other classes. If anything, this server is a low magic world, which makes life easier on your class in so many ways. The problem, as you said, is all Wizzys start out weak and it's probably tougher here because everything is tougher here. Good luck & have fun.

It's the same here.

This is easily remedied by asking higher lvl wizards/sorcerers/clerics for scrolls to learn. Most wizards have all the spells tehy need by lvl 17.

You should look around a bit more. the smithy sells hwlmets that give wizard slots. The diference between wizard and cleric/drui/ranger/paladin, is that they use wisdom (which is always on an ammulet on this server) and wizards use intelligenc(which is always on a helet on this server).

Once again I say look before you ask. The crafting system here is pretty good (especially compared to the NWN stock version). A wizard right now is the ONLY class that can make Master Artisan Arcane items. All other carafting is done by specialists in that field (i.e. fighters for weapons, AA for fletching, etc.)

Because Wizards and clerics are powerful enough without having +5 keen weapons doing fire damage at lvl 9. You can learn them all because they are usefull at different times. Sometimes its better to have a +5 weapon, sometimes that fire damge helps more.

If this class were so lowly, then there wouldnt be serious discussions on how to make a fighter able to stand up to them. I believe Celor'Duath in particular would be shocked at what you wrote here, as he is one of the best characters in NS, and he is a wizard.

this is all true untill lvl 17-20, after that only well built characters can stand up to a wizard (with the exception of monk). Once a wizard gets epic (even a crappy one), he is so powerful, that the average non-caster build cannot last 4 rounds vs him (this includes minor casters such as rangers).

Im getting the feeling that you played about 3 levels of wizard and decided that it was useless. As is usually case when you give up on something before you have truly begun, you have missed out on alot.

I've never had problems playing Wizard. Its all about knowing what spells to use when ect..
Power-wise its probably only behind Sorcerer, and not by much if played skillfully.

IMHO, a well built wizard will beat a well build sorcerer every time. However, a bad sorcerer is much better than a bad wizard and easier to play.

Jesus what an uninformed whine. Yea wizards are weak. That must be why Kromix(I think 35) killed all 5 of us (4 FoN members and me all around 25 I was lvl 29) without even getting below uninjured. Wizards must really suck. Sure, I'll keep repeating that to myself when IGMS hits me for 140.

I remember you. You are the player who whined about not being able to stack weapon enchants and about scrolls. Yea big nerf that is. Especially cos sorcs don't need scrolls and wizards get 2 new spells each level so if you go epic in wizard you will soon have most spells. The only ones really hurting with lack of scrolls are PMs.

Have you tried actually summoning anything?
Or summoning with a focus in conjuration?
Or summoning as a planar subrace?
Sheesh. talk about easy going.

You do get spell slots from INT just like other classes.

Wizards also have staves all over the game. Some hard to get some hidden, but alot have spell slots as well.

You can craft your own scrolls/potions and trade with players. That is how the magic system is setup. Not 1 of every spell for sale for your pleasure.
What AD&D campaign or DM has ever done that lol.

If your having that much trouble, play a cleric. Still get to cast and you get good combat. Might I suggest Animal and Evil domains and an Aasimar subrace for maximum summons.

First feat take spell focus conjure.

I just started a wizzy also. Not having a problem with it, though I takes some work to find players to exchange scrolls with. For the most part, I make a list of spells I want that other classes would have, then ask specifically for someone of that class to make me those specific scrolls. Arcane crafting is a big help too.

I am carrying tons of scrolls. I used to sell them, then once I wanted to make a wizard and had no scrolls on my high level. That taught me a lesson.

also, try using unconventional spells. enchantment spells like hold and conjuration spells like edvards black tentacles(god i love this spell!) really help out in a fight, cripple the enemy first, and THEN start flinging fireballs
"O cruel fate, floating through the void of space like gravity's plaything. O to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones, it bones for thee."
