Break The Mountain
Break The Mountain
Everytime I get a character up to level 5 or 6, I find I have no-one to party with..... unless I go to the mountain.
it's pretty bad.
please look at the alternatives and modify them to be more attractive ?
or lock the mountain for a week ?
or something ?
surely I'm not the only one that would like to experience NS4 without grinding on ogres on the mountain for 10 levels EVERY TIME I make a character just because it's what people have done for so long they don't wanna do anything else.
please ?
I mean lots of stuff is getting dev attention and being nerfed or changed or whatever.... can something be done about this soon ?

Re: Break The Mountain
I leveled my last char in a party at the yuan-tis. You should try it. Its quite fun! Though no one goes there because its quite far from Avendale so no one usually bothers to.

Re: Break The Mountain
its been said many times before...alot of places to go other than giant mountain. if you only go there, its your fault, not ours. just because it is easiest to power lvl there with certain builds everyone goes there...doesn't mean its the best place to go

Re: Break The Mountain
yeah... I know that...
it's everyone else that wont even seem to try somewhere else, and soloing your way through isn't viable, that's how ns4 is built.
but hey if you guys are happy with everyone grinding on the mountain then so be it, seems very ns3 if you ask me though

Re: Break The Mountain
tell me your lvl and build....then i'll tell you a place you can grind out lvls by yourself. just because its easier to have a party doesn't mean you "have" to have one

I'm an ECL 3 drow bard dexer level 8 currently.
my naked ac without shield is 19, buffed I think it's like 27, with items (in a pinch) maybe 30
some suggestions on places to go other than the ogre pass would be welcomed.
I do find it quite difficult in the formians currently, not sure what level you're supposed to be to go there but the myrmarch formians are always a problem, of course they should be they are cr 13 afterall.

Re: Break The Mountain
Minotar lair -- not a place for a level 5 or 6 person, you will be dead soon
Haddon Mirk -- agian not a place for a lvl 5 or 6, wolves will tear you up
Couple of catacombs-- undead, 5 or 6 th lvl dead on the spot
Snake Pits -- pretty much dead, poison is not good for the body
Old Wyrm Road -- bandits, good luck
Yeon ti Wastes -- dead atm is what you will say on shout
The Wold -- agian dead atm on shout
Old Town North -- run, if you can good luck
5 or 6 th lvl need to collect blue powder and go to like orcs in black hills, gobo's and bugbears in enchanted forest. MA can kill the pigmy's and the low lvl formians, NC has it's low lvl undead, try the underdark but dont venture that far. Wild wood good asst of animals.
Best way to explore is get a high lvl char you have and explore the whole area or ask someone from your faction.
I really do think there should be like a duplicate of giant mtn or something close to it somewhere else and beef up formains to obtain same exp and to create a diverse atmosphere here.

Re: Break The Mountain
There is an alternative to the mountain and its for dexers its called ash mountain. Best with a party and could be done solo with a decent 8-10 as long as you are very careful in how you pull. I personally dont hit the mountain until 8th anyways. Its all what you make it.
I put the IO in socIOpath!

Re: Break The Mountain
snake pits are fun, and a good way to tell people about it is when you can't go a map on the mountain without seeing someone. so mountains full, recommend snake pit, it's about the same exp i think, just wear piercing gear, and bring LOTS of heal kits because you'll get poisoned.. oh and don't try the boss.. that's a quick death.

Re: Break The Mountain
for lvl 5, a small party of 5ish toons (or solo with a good number and assortment of potions/hks) that could go up the mountain could (also) try:
-formians (inside and out)
-rock peak crypt
-yuan-ti (need evasion) not available for rk/ao
-orcs then into the underdark
-duergar (again, not for rk/ao)
-ash mtn- pretty tough actually, the rogues can take out a lvl5 in 1 hit, and inside good luck with the mages and guardians
-vampires/lower zons/low nc guards
-highland cypt is doable with a paladin since you're immune to fear and disease
-silver road/ice flats bandits
-redhorn/deep woods (ogres and giants, gnolls, big bears, kobolds and drow)
-undersea caves
-bugbears n'stuff going the other way from dark forest
-southern pass ogres/giants/werewolves
-haddon mirk is doable if you have FoM OR paralysis immunity..or high saves
-gargoyles/animals
-lost crypt and ajoining
-angmar planes
some of these are harder and easier depending on the size of your party and class mix/builds...the cr ranges from 5 to 13 and beyond if you go deeper into some places... very similar to the mtn.

Re: Break The Mountain
there are several reasons why its hard to pry ppl off the mountain:
1. easy access. doesnt require a $$ dragon ride (lvl9 only please) or $$ ferry ride, or a 10 minute unhasted crawl to somewhere. all things being equal, might as well save the $8-12k gold right? and if you die you're right back in it.
2. they drop books.
3. they do predictable melee physical damage and not too much else to worry about. provided you skip the trolls which are absurdly difficult.
4. they can be critical hit/sneak attacked
#1 is by far the most important reason from what i've seen.
no archers, poison, mind effects, drains fear etc. the casters at worst will drop an ice storm on you. most other places are both more difficult and harder to get to (especially if you die and have to run back to your party solo, and pay for it to boot).
the best thing that could be done to promote the other spots is make them plain faster or cheaper to get to from ave (or any other bind point that includes decent shopping).

Re: Break The Mountain
Yes, the fact that Ogres/giants mountain are so close to Avendale is the major selling point.

Re: Break The Mountain
wow..look at all those places he could go.
don't forget:
rock peak mausoleum...good run to get to it, good xp while your there at low lvl
the bandit ice flats...not too bad, just take them slow if you can.
the catacombs on the way to the mirk by way of the southern road....decent xp at lower lvls.
the possiblities are endless

Re: Break The Mountain
rock peak is good, except the number of spawn in there tends to be on the low side, so it wont take you that long to clear it out, then you have to wait for them to respawn again. Maybe increase the size of the crypt, making it a 2 or 3 layer thing, and put the GK on the bottom layer?
