Dex/wis based ac is a crapshoot, there's a couple ways it can disappear (game bugs). Dying fixes most of them.

lol. jebbo did you reply to the right thread? good to see you. please check pm.

as for will saves, yes. solid will saves on all five characters that i've tried it with. both. of that list of characters i've been whooped with two zen archer clerics, two paladins and a sorc/monk. so i'd say at the very least it wouldn't be their collective weakness. if a zen archer cleric can't make the save what can? further, taunt is a concentration check. is the aura a will save?

again the confusing thing is that it doesn't happen regularly to one character. it either happens or doesn't but when it does it hits the whole group. every dwarf in the area rolling mad crits and everyplayer getting cranked by them.

When the npc's start getting alot more crits than usual, I like to call that 'super crit mode'.

The game engine kind of glitches. It's similar to when we used to have to re-roll our level ups and you could try for a very long time and not get the max hit points. You would have to log out and then back in, and then your hit point rolls would go back to normal. Similarly, when you would cast a Wail of the Banshee and all of the monsters roll 20's on their saves.

It seems to happen with a large spawn and/or lag, and the Amazons and Dwarf Plane are the most common areas. If your party can't handle the 'super crit mode', you should all leave the area. Try a few maps away, and the game engine should go back to normal.

as far as i can tell no amount of concentration will get you past dorf taunt. i've gone in with no conc toons and max conc + some gear toons... they all get taunted for the max +6 every time.

as for the uberdorf issue i have to say i've seen that effect in other places. once in a while you will come across a GOD version of some pedestrian mob that will crit you every other hit and seem to have a lot mroe hps/ac than usual. ive seen it in dwp on the driders and even some level 20-25 areas.

ive always chalked it up to bored DMs or the retarded nwn "random" number generator.

the only design change i noticed other than that was the new dwarf aura, which has been toned down. it was instagiblets before if you got more than one aura on ya.

I would need to double check but i've seen the dwarves go from 45 AB to 55 AB. This has happened before the wipe as well. Not sure if this helps.

tep, that's a common mistake that i make to not recognize damage types and adjust for them so i appreciate the suggestion. but it seems to be everyone in the mob is rolling crits. the hammer guys. the axe guys. the short sword guys. even the danged lorewarden was critting us (once it ran out of its 20 ice storms, lol). so as for stacking i'm not even sure which type to stack. i guess bludgeon to avoid the elites?

dalan, if its a glitch then its happening pretty frequently. occasional glitches are fine. we expect those. zons i'd say maybe i've seen it 1 out of 100 mobs. not enough really to remember. dwarfs prewipe were the same - not often enough to remember. sure you'll have moments where the party is floored but pre wipe it seemed to happen more often in goblins that dwarfs. now its dwarfs and seriously its like 1 out of 3 or 4 mobs. but since i seem to be far short of handling super crit mode then i'll just respawn and go elsewhere. good feedback and it does seem to reset if you can get to the next screen, even if you're still taunted.

oh well. i can just go somewhere else. HOK was really cool last night so I'll keep doing that.

have a great new year NS4! i've had a great time in 2008 leveling with you all.

only advice we can offer for mob crits is that NWN uses a random roll generator based on a certain set of numbers that it picks at random....which it turns out, isn't very random at all. so we have no control on what mobs roll for anything.

How I *think* the random number generator works (I think I read about this somewhere) like this...

I think NWN server generates a set of random numbers when the server loads. This way it doesn't have to run the pseudo-random number generator algorithm every time it needs a number, but rather it pulls one out of the pool of numbers whenever it needs one. Thing is, every creature and player, as well as many spells, feats, skills, etc. will pull out a number. Since we're dealing with players who are essentially unpredictable, the numbers actually are going to be fairly random... that is, there's virtually no way of predicting the next number that's going to get pulled out.

In order to predict the next number, you'd have to know the original set of numbers, as well as what every creature/player on the server is doing with exhaustive detail. You know how NPCs just walk around and sometimes make gestures at other NPCs? Whether they walk randomly or use a particular gesture is decided by pulling a few random numbers from the pool. BTW, not sure if you've noticed it, but in NS4 the gestures used are based on their hitdie (level). So if a level 30 NPC is standing near a level 20 NPC, the level 20 may make pitiful/begging gestures towards the higher level, while the level 30 may look like he's barking orders at the lower level... kinda neat, and I think Joran or Lokey probably did that years ago.

Anyway, for what its worth I think the number generator is generally fine... when players roll a d20 and get shocking results a few times in a row, well that's bound to happen with any random number generator... if there were no unusual rolls once in a while it wouldn't be random. With players on 24 hours a day every day you're going to see some stuff that looks organized when its not.
