Help with learning classes, factions, items, etc....
I am trying to avoid making 3 or 4 characters before I get the hang of this place. The things I'm trying to find out is what kind of items, restrictions, etc I can expect to find here and what kind of classes are acceptable in each faction. Basically, I am trying to find which direction to go to build a strong playable character here without having to level up half a dozen toons to figure it out. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

You will find most of the information you need here;
http://www.nsrealm.com/ns4wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Some updates from the changelog have not been posted to the Wiki so it's always good to crossreference with it.

Good luck and have fun.

Outside of MLoki's post, maybe consider a pure class monk or fighter. The fighter has some nice bonuses. Both can usually hold their own in pvp action as well as be great support in a party for adventuring into the harder areas and seeing what you will come up against.
Plus getting into various parties will get you in touch with some of the more experienced players here who can offer advice on items and combo class builds.
You can most definitely solo your way to level forty, but you can not solo most of the bosses that have the best drops.
Most of us, starting out here have gone through many a character by "test" building. Some folks have deleted more characters in their learning experience, than what they have successfully built.
Good luck with your adventures.

Thanks folks. I'm liking how balanced it seems and I know some of the long time players here, so that will help. I'm starting out with a Paladin because I have never made a DragonKnight (I think, the new PreClass) so I want to try that out.

GL with that. I've abandoned let's see...KarmaNWN wrote:I am trying to avoid making 3 or 4 characters before I get the hang of this place
Toons at levels 35 34 31 21 20 20 20 19 14, and have at least one 40 I almost never use. This server is absolutely filled with changes to standard NWN, many of which are not in the changelog or the Wiki. Until I got into a guild and made friends with some more veteran players who'd figured it out the hard way, well... It's a steep learning curve.
The thing is, many of the changes are really cool and work towards balance and force intelligent contemplation and careful building. They are there for a reason, but nothing is going to substitute for the experience of just playing here long enough to learn the ins and outs.

the best thing you can do is plan your build and have someone review it. there are tons of great builders on this server who fully understand the pages and pages of data in the change log. it is almost cruel to just say to a guy, "oh you're new? here. read this." <-- such a beating.
sure, you definitely need to read the change log - and the entire wiki. but who wants to spend two weeks doing that right?
two recommendations:
1. if you have a concept, send it in a PM to a veteran builder. they can look it over for you and help tweak it for you.
2. play a melee type for your first.
when starting this server there are two things to learn. 1. the server and module and 2. the spells and their changes. its really unlikely that you'll be able to master both at the same time. so focus on the module first and build a caster second.
i'll be glad to review your build. honestly, there are better builders but i think i can keep you from a blunder. i've built a few paladins. its a good choice. also, i'm not from your faction. but i'd rather see you enjoy the character and the server. and i really won't gain anything from knowing the build and your secret would be safe. but since you're in NC you might just run it by one of them. the FON and CLAD guys are great builders. i bet they even voluteer to help you in this thread.
good luck,

heh a big part of the fun of the server is bringing up new builds, successful or not.
Three years of nursery school and you think you know it all.
