Would gladly trade donation rewards for dev communication

Post by izzle2 »

Here is a copy of the email I sent to DD today. Please feel free to post your 2 cents and this. Let's tell the devs what we want to see and offer our support if they have need of it.

Dear Deputy Dog,

I have been meaning to make a donation for the NS4 servers for some time now. Your recent post prompted me to do so today. However, not because I want any of the rewards listed. I simply feel better asking for something if I am an active, contributing member of this community.

I will begin with a word of caution. The exchange of rewards for money is not a donation it is a sale. That of course goes against Bioware's end-user agreement. Although I think it's fair to try and get some compensation for all the money and time put into this project, the product's license strictly prohibits you from doing so. Do with that, what you will.

What I would like to see is more communication. A short post every other week would be sufficient for me. The rumors run thick about what is and isn't being done. The jokes about "soon" and "eventually" are barely even funny now. I believe the community, as a whole would surprise you with their patience and understanding if we simply knew what was going on.

One final note, if there are issues related to the developers lack of time, energy, or interest in this project, there are many people here (myself included) that would gladly lend their time and skills to the cause. You have but to ask.

Sincerely,

Glewienia - Legendary Brethren, High Council member

Fair enough.

I will do what I can to keep you guys posted on current events.

Right now the ns4 servers are at my house, which I am moving down the street from. I will be moving the boxes within the week, so expect some sporadic down time.

I will also be freeing up more time to work on the module, and get Lokey and maybe a few others up to speed.

We have a few updates waiting to go in as we speak.
Item pricing, some script fixes, and some area openings for now.

These will go in hopefully before the end of the month if all goes well.

Joran fell off the planet so it has been rough getting things working.
That is one of the reasons 3.5 has had so much done to it. Much easier to dev on.

The donation thing is not new. We have given out rewards or requests in the past for donations, and have always been open to a request.
The problem was the time involved for some requests.

To make it simple, a list will give some incentive to those on the edge of donating, and make it easier for me to hand out the rewards.

It is legal along the lines of the Eula because we are not charging for access to the game. This was discussed with Bioware's CEO over a year ago in an email. Although I must say Bioware gave up emailing us long ago as well. Was fun doing all the patch testing for them.

Anyway, look for me in game inthe near future doing testing and such as time permits. Also look for Lokey to start work on ns4 activly again as well.

Oh.. Im getting Married again on May 8th. :) Picked up 2 extra kids in the process as well.

I certainly agree with you information on the progress on ns4 is worth a lot to most of us...

I for one like the donation for rewards idea, as Deputy put it it will take the people on edge of donating to donate.

It also serves to balance the server in some ways, not everyone who plays this game has tons of spare time to put into a character. That said donating will help players have more fun, and will help the cause.

charging for items, xp, gold etc, isnt against the Eula. a lot of servers do this..they simply dont advertise it. Perhaps one day there will be a reward system for events that will eventually lead to custom items and such..something to strive for after you hit lvl 40. Some servers allow you to purchase stat points and feats after level 40. I would love to see this in ns.

that being sad, once some new areas are added there will be a huge immigration to the servers, there already is. the lvl 25 cap has leveled the playing field and you no longer have to be 35+ to be relatively safe in the realm.

Married? Oh my, I'm sure that will give you lots of extra time

I wonder if your fiancée has seen your assurance that you'll be making changes here before the end of the month  ("Honey, why aren't you working on your vows???")

Anyway, congratulations and thanks for the communication. Thanks also to Glewienia for contributing to this process.
