From NS3 to NS4

Post by Elagneros »

Ok, like some of the regular players, I've been getting my fix from NS 3.5 while the server's been down. One thing that I've certainly noticed is while there are plenty of similarities between the two, the differences stand out. Now I think I've heard that NS 3.5 represents an earlier peroid of history in the world, before the world became what it is in NS 4. If that's the case, has there ever been any offical story reason as to how the Aetheria of NS 3 became the Aetheria of NS 4?

If there isn't, I have some ideas of how the world changed if the devs are interested in it.

As we all know, In the Aetheria we see in ns3.5 items of great power are common. Even creatures as simple as a halfling... wandering through a mountain cave could find an artifact of great power... and at lvl 1 at that!! As time wore on more and more items were uncovered and greater powers of magic achieved...

... funny thing magic... it has a powerful affect on the world around us. It surrounds us flows through us and binds the world together. When someone casts a spell, the spell draws its power from the fabric of our reality. Normally, this power, this force is quickly dispersed. The spell is cast and the magical energies return to the universe to be used again.

Imbuing an item with magic can be extreemly useful indeed. A set of armor can provide greater protection. Your sword becomes a more devastaing weapon... but, this power comes with a price. When magic is peramanently imbued into an item, it does not return to the fabric of reality.

When done in moderation, the process of permanently enchanting an item has a negligible affect on the universe. Even powerful enchantments normally use very little magic compared to the amount that maintains our reality. However, over time, when items of great power are not limited in their creation, the fabric wears thin. The walls that separate other planes from our own begin to wear down and eventually even break.

The Aetheria we once knew reached this limit. As more and more powerful items were created to satisfy the desire of so many adventurers the walls of reality wore thin. The first rifts opened.

This is no simple event, a rift opening. When the fabric of reality tears, the world feels it. Rifts began to open all over Aetheria. Many an adventurer was killed by the ensuing destruction, and with them, their great items of power. Those items that they had created from nature's magic, nature took back. The destruction ensued for a year and began to wane. As the items were destroyed in the rifts, the fabric began to repair itself. The magic returned and balance began to be restored.

The Aetheria we know today still sees the effect of this great event. Many of the most powerful items were destroyed. Though some remain, these artifacts are rare. The rifts killed most of the inhabitants of Aetheria, and with them the knowledge of how to create these items of power was lost.

Now it has been so long that few know or even care about what happened. The only remaining evidence of what happened is the rifts. Over time the people of Aetheria have forgotton the orgins and properties of the rifts. Though they have discovered their ability to bind their souls to the rifts, the true power, their true identity as gateways to the soul of the universe has been lost to time. Now all the people of Aetheria care about is war.

... and ive lost my train of thought... :(

The tie between magic and nature reminds me of Dark Sun... That was a fun campaign setting :)

Actually, I was thinking the changes were caused by the War of the Relics:
Zing wrote:It was once said that the different peoples of the world known as Aetheria were in possession of magical gifts that were bestowed upon them by the gods themselves.

These gifts gave the races power beyond that of normal mortals, but with that power came greed and corruption...

Godly rewards were found to lead the people to godly temptations and then ultimately to battle.

Battle became Civil War and Civil War became Chaos.

The Chaos caused by the War of the Relics fractured the Nexus, creating the planar rifts which still plague Aetheria to this day. The chaos unleashed by the war itself was so severe, that very face of Aetheria itself was changed as different places in the world ended up...elsewhere.

I heard some idiot named Kefka pulled the statues of the three sisters apart and caused an apocalyptic world-shift... :o
