Trade is as it should be. Even if gold would be more hard to get, I wouldn't want to trade a hard won item for it. Remember before there were coins people would trade items for other stuff .

You would trade a hard won item for it if there was something you had to have mass quantities of gold to buy, and hard won items fetched tons of gold.
