new avendell transitions feedback

new avendell transitions feedback

the new avendell system just hit reflections and is functional. however it is a little counterintuitive. the portal to dark forest drops you off right in front of a southfacing transition in dark forest. if you take that transition it does not port you back where you came from (which is what you would expect.) it instead brings you to the new bypass zone.

in the bypass zone you head south and take an east-facing exit, which ends up dropping you at the south end of avendell facing north. going immediately south from there to the zone exit at least DOES take you back to the zone you just came from, but from the east facing exit.

it would be more consistent to have a single entrance and exit to avendell on it's west side, to match the entrance in the bypass zone.

if you HAVE to have a direct link to dark forest, have the new portal to it drop you in the southeast corner of dark forest (so it would seem you went northwest in avendell) with no nearby transition back.

thus you could logically think of avendell as having moved one zone east.

none of this is a big deal but i find a consistent "mental image map" to be invaluable in giving directions and generally learning my way around.

I agree with disastro, a transition on the west side of the map would help a good deal.
It would also help to make the inn feel like less of a dead end.
Associations are a powerful thing, when you see something that does not jibe with your memory/feeling it throws you for a sec. Kinda like when you spin around a circle a bunch of times and then cannot walk straight.
All in all I do like the change. :)

If the reason for the change is to prevent relics form entering a neuteral city, the change makes perfect sense.. have a transition bring you back to portal point would defeat the goal.

er, who suggested having a transition bring you back to the portal point?

and i assume what keeps relics out is a coded no-relic status for the city of avendell, so you could have any number of transition points into ave and relics would stil be blocked (otherwise the main door to avendell in the new zone would pose exactly the same problem you present here).
